What Sea Moss Can and Can't Do

If you've spent any time on wellness TikTok, you've met sea moss by now. A jar of jewel-colored gel, a big promise, and a price that makes you wonder if it's worth it.

Sea moss is a type of red seaweed. The traditional kind is Chondrus crispus, long known as Irish moss.¹ It comes as gels, gummies, capsules, and powders, usually with a long list of claims attached. Near the top of that list: that it holds 92 of the 102 minerals your body needs.

That number is where we'll start, because it's mostly a myth. From there we'll sort the claims that hold up from the ones that don't, and talk about the one part of sea moss worth being careful with.

About that 92-mineral number

Sea moss earns a good part of its reputation. It's a real source of iodine and other minerals, and people have eaten it for generations.


There's just one number that got out of hand. You've probably seen it: "92 of the 102 minerals your body needs." That line ended up on labels and in videos faster than anyone stopped to check it. The minerals the body needs make a short, defined list, nowhere near a hundred.² No analysis of sea moss has found anything close to 92, either.

None of this is a knock on sea moss. It's still mineral-rich.³ So the real question is what's in there, and how much.

What it has going for it

Here's the good part, and it's real.


Sea moss brings a few things worth having:
  • Iodine. This is the standout. Your thyroid depends on iodine to make the hormones that run your metabolism and keep your body developing and working as it should, and it can't make those hormones without it.⁴ Since your body produces no iodine of its own, you have to get it from food, and sea moss is one of the more natural ways to do that.⁵
  • Everyday minerals. Calcium, iron, manganese, and zinc, the kind of steady, food-level nourishment you'd hope for from a sea vegetable.³
  • Gentle fiber. Most of sea moss is soft, soluble fiber, the kind your gut generally gets along well with.⁶
That fiber is also where things get interesting. Early animal research is exploring how it might feed the good bacteria in your gut, and the signs so far are encouraging, though it hasn't been shown in people yet.⁶

None of this needs a big number to sound good. Sea moss is a genuinely nourishing little sea plant, and that was always enough.

The iodine catch

Remember how iodine was the best thing sea moss had going for it? It's also the one you can get too much of.


The reason is dose. A small daily amount of sea moss is good for you: about 4 grams of dried Irish moss covers a quarter of a child's daily iodine, without going anywhere near a harmful level.⁵ The trouble only starts when people treat more as better and take big scoops of gel every day. You'd have to get carried away to reach it, but the ceiling is real: it takes a lot of Irish moss in a day to cross the safe upper limit for adults.⁵

And going over isn't harmless. Too much iodine can unsettle the very thyroid it's meant to support.⁴

So sea moss isn't something to megadose. A sensible daily amount is the whole point.

Who should check first

Sea moss is fine for most people. A few of us should check with a doctor first, and it comes back to the iodine.

  • If you take thyroid medication. Iodine feeds the thyroid directly, so add sea moss only after your doctor says it's fine.⁵
  • If you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Your iodine balance matters more than usual, so check with your doctor before adding sea moss.⁴
  • If you already get plenty of iodine. Between iodine supplements and regular seaweed, it adds up, and sea moss adds more.⁵
For most of us, a modest daily serving is nothing to worry about.
